Wildlife and Plants of Vermont
Mammals of Vermont
Vermont is home to hundreds of species of mammals and many can be seen on a regular basis. Deer, of course, can be seen or heard in the early morning and evening. Many a person heading out at night will hear the huffing noise deer make as a warning and followed by them making lots of noise as they crash off through the woods. It is also common to hear the coyotes barking up on the hills at night.

Black Bears
While it is unusual to see black bear at Forest Echo, our land is part of the Green Mountain Bear Corridor and they are definitely present; it is not uncommon to find scat or other evidence that they have been around. Adult black bears can reach as much as 500 pounds and while they have never been a big problem at Forest Echo, do not leave food out on the porch or dump your waste food in the woods. The Green Mountain Club has good tips about living with bears and how to behave if you encounter them.
